Back To: The Tyranny of Materiality
Ted drove the school bus when I lived in Index before I had the great Datsun B-210 my Grandmother Crystal bought for me . . . Ted was cool and we respected him so we didn't give him any problems . . . it was very different when I lived in Toddsville . . . the meanest boys I've ever known controlled the bus . . . I have a slight memory of being forced to sit on the bus floor so this guy Keith could use me as a footrest . . . there were more serious incidents though . . . children are barbaric especially when they know they can escape consequential punishment (which is the majority of the time) . . . sometimes these boys I knew just didn't care and acted without conscience . . . I wonder what ethical framework developed over the years since . . .
"Thus
conscience does make cowards [of us all] . . ."
William Shakespeare:
"Hamlet", Act III, Scene i.
I'll bet this was 7th grade . . . Charlie (to the left) is an engineer (or something) now and he told me he was going overseas to design some bridge (or something) at our ten year class reunion . . . it's funny because looking at the bright yellow shirt I distinctly remember the fuzzy red sun with Acapulco written in fuzzy blue letters beneath it but I don't remember the shirt in and of itself . . . this memory is tied to this image otherwise it would have floated away with all the other extraneous memories . . .
Charlie and I at our 10 year high school reunion . . .
This
photo depicts the me I was right after I moved in with JA . . . I cleaned
the house everyday . . . we lived in a farmhouse with his sister and her
husband . . . both JA and Brennie worked on Yerdon's farm . . . I disliked proximity to cows: I
didn't like to be close to cows and I wonder why . . . it's not their size as
my horse was bigger though there was something about being close to them that
made me uncomfortable . . . this is JA's nephew DJ (he didn't live with us) . .
. I always found this image fascinating because it appears as if my lip is
deformed . . .

Steve, you were cool . . . your lip was deformed . . . how did that affect how you were treated? I'm wearing JA's dog tags (he was in the National Guard) . . . I was told that JA went AWOL (Away Without Leave) after I fell off the cliff . . . I remember JA and Brian fighting in the hospital . . . hummmm . . . maybe I remember being told about it . . . I'm not sure . . .
"There's
no art / To find the mind's construction in the face .
